黑翅型雌蟲：翅端 1/2~1/3 透明而基部深色。
飛行速度慢且輕盈，像蝴蝶一樣在水面上飄動。
喜歡棲息在水草豐富的靜止水域。

全身呈黃褐色，翅膀透明，最明顯的特徵是後翅基部極寬（像片大帆）這讓牠們能利用氣流長時間滑翔而不費力。
牠們是「蜻蜓界的馬拉松選手」，會隨季風大規模遷徙，在台灣，常能見到成千上萬隻在草坪或空地上方盤旋，民間常稱為「雨傘蜻蜓」，因為牠們集體低飛時往往預示著即將下雨。

體型較小，最明顯的特徵是腹部比例，前半段（1-3節）明顯膨大如球狀，後半段則突然縮得很細，看起來「腰部」特別粗。
習性 :
雖然體型小，但捕捉獵物非常精悍。
牠們喜歡停棲在離水面很近的低矮草叢或石頭上，不易被察覺。
